🪵 How to Care for a Wooden Cutting Board

A good wooden cutting board isn’t just a kitchen tool — it’s an investment. With the right care, a board can last for decades, stay sanitary, and even look better with age. Here’s how to keep yours in top shape.

1. Clean It the Right Way

• Wash with warm water and mild soap

• Never soak it or put it in the dishwasher

• Dry it upright so air can circulate

Moisture is the enemy of wood — too much and it warps, too little and it cracks.

2. Disinfect Naturally

If you want to sanitize your board without harsh chemicals, sprinkle coarse salt on the surface and scrub with half a lemon. It removes odors and kills bacteria.

3. Oil It Regularly

A dry board will crack over time. Oiling keeps it hydrated and protected.

How often:

• Heavy use: once a week

• Light use: once a month

What to use:

• Food‑grade mineral oil

• Board butter (a mix of oil + beeswax)

Apply a generous amount, let it soak in, then wipe off the excess.

4. Remove Stains and Knife Marks

For stains:

• Make a paste of baking soda + water

• Scrub gently with a sponge

For knife marks:

• Lightly sand with 220‑grit sandpaper

• Re‑oil afterward

5. Store It Properly

Keep your board in a dry place with good airflow. Avoid storing it flat on a damp countertop.
